Working with Savroc
What does working with Savroc look like?
One project in six phases, with Savroc in every one: targets and starting point; simulation of the coating on your parts, from drawings; the design of a new line or the conversion of your existing one, with the targets agreed in writing; the build or conversion; commissioning in your plant until the process runs to those targets; and production with ongoing process support. Each phase ends with data and a decision that is yours.
Does Savroc coat parts for customers?
No. Savroc does not offer contract coating. TripleHard® is already tested and in industrial use, so a project starts from the simulation of your parts; samples are coated only on special request.
What engineering does Savroc provide?
Simulation of the coating and the line for your parts, covering flow, current distribution, anode geometry and capacity; the design of the line or of the conversion; commissioning in your plant and operator training; and process support in production.
Who builds the line?
A new continuous line is built and delivered by ILMAR in Italy to Savroc's process design, and the customer orders the line from ILMAR. Savroc leads the project, licenses the process and commissions it in the customer's plant.
How does TripleHard® scale worldwide?
Through engineering-led licensing. Manufacturers run TripleHard® in their own plants under a Savroc process licence, with Savroc engineering from the first simulation to production. Licences are agreed per customer, plant and territory.
How long does implementation take?
The two routes differ. Converting an existing open-tank line is the shorter route: the time to stable series production depends on line size, part families and validation requirements. A new continuous line is a capital project with a lead time set by its engineering and manufacture, agreed in the design phase. In both cases OEM qualification of the coating usually runs longer than the installation, and Savroc supports it with data throughout.
What is the first step?
Send us your drawings and the targets your parts must meet, or come to Kuopio and see the line running. We start with the simulation of your parts.
The coating
What is TripleHard®?
TripleHard® is a patented hard-chrome coating developed by Savroc in Kuopio, Finland: a nickel anchor layer under one or more trivalent chromium, Cr(III), layers. It is designed to replace hexavalent, Cr(VI), hard chrome on parts such as hydraulic cylinder rods, with hard-chrome-level hardness without heat treatment.
Has TripleHard® been validated by industry?
Yes. The coating has been validated by a major global OEM for that OEM's application, and TripleHard® has been in industrial production since 2024 in open-tank coating of hydraulic rods at Hydroline in Tampere, a Savroc shareholder.
What corrosion resistance does TripleHard® reach?
In the laboratory benchmark most specifications ask for, neutral salt spray, rating 10 at 1000 h, a result that depends on the nickel underlayer configuration. In service: no rust after 34 months on a hydraulic rod in mine service, where the Cr(VI) reference on the same steel rusted at 2 months. In other tests: 20 µm intact at 456 h in acetic acid salt spray, and no attack in 5 % sulphuric acid at 100 °C.
What do the mining field cases show?
Field cases with a global mining equipment OEM in Canada, Australia and Poland between 2020 and 2026. In the headline case the Cr(VI) hard-chrome reference rod showed rust after 2 months while the TripleHard® rod on the same steel in the same application showed none after 34 months. It is one case among several, not a universal lifetime claim.
How does TripleHard® perform on sealing surfaces?
In a 250,000-cycle test performed by a global OEM, TripleHard® showed lower seal leakage than the Cr(VI) reference. After sliding wear its surface is also smoother than Cr(VI) hard chrome of twice the thickness. Seal performance depends on the seal design and the operating conditions.
Is TripleHard® available for engine valves and shock absorbers?
Yes, on a converted existing line rather than the continuous line. TripleHard® has been tested for engine valves and shock absorber rods. Each customer application is engineered from the customer's drawings and verified during commissioning. Results reported for hydraulic rods are not claimed for these parts; each application has its own test data on its own page.
Regulation
Why are manufacturers looking for alternatives to hexavalent hard chrome?
Hexavalent chromium compounds are carcinogenic substances of very high concern under REACH and already need a time-limited authorisation for every use. In April 2025 ECHA proposed an EU-wide restriction covering hard-chrome electroplating; RAC adopted its opinion in June 2026, SEAC's final opinion is expected in November 2026, and the Commission decision follows. The problem is the chemistry during plating, not the hard chrome itself: TripleHard® gives the coating from a Cr(III) hard-chrome process.
The continuous line
Is the continuous line running?
Yes. The industrial-scale prototype in Kuopio has run since August 2026 and has delivered consistent coating quality in pilot runs to date. Version 1 is complete: the first-round run parameters are locked and optimisation continues. It is a prototype: its job is the data for the lines built for customers.
How large is a customer line, and how fast does it run?
It depends on the customer's rods. The configuration, the size and the line speed are set per customer in simulation, from the diameter range, the coating thickness and the annual volume. By the end of 2026 the definition of the customer line is complete.
When will TripleHard® be in mass production?
Savroc's target is production ramp-up with a rod manufacturer in H1 2027, and mass production of TripleHard® on the continuous line is planned for 2027. Licences are agreed per customer, plant and territory; the first step is a conversation about your parts.
Who developed the line?
Savroc developed the continuous process on its own 3D-printed pilot line. The industrial-scale line in Kuopio was built by ILMAR, and the lines for customers are built to Savroc's process design.
